Dog Training

Dog Training

Training is our heart and soul. We love training and working with the dogs. Our programs are designed to keep intensity in the dogs and develop a dog that can work FOR their owners. Besides training the dogs, we work hard to teach the owners how to handle and train their dogs after they go home.

Dogs we have trained have been photographed and displayed in both Pointing Dog Journal and Traveling Wing Shooter. The famous author and photographer Ben O. Williams has spent time photographing Ben hunting and training bird dogs.

Puppy
(Dogs enrolled in the Puppy Program should be at least six months of age.)

Our Puppy Program is designed to get your puppy started right. It is not a program designed to break dogs, but instead to get them on the right path. It is designed to get the dog and owners used to working with each other in the field. This is a low-stress training program. It’s a fun time for the puppy and the owners.

  • Yard Work – Whoa, Come, Heel, Fetch, and Kennel.
  • Patterning- Your dog will learn basic handling and quartering skills.
  • Birds- Your dog will have the correct introduction to birds, starting with pigeons, and then moving on to quail.
  • Gunfire- Your dog will be introduced to guns the proper and safe way.
  • Obedience- Dogs will learn that jumping, barking, chasing, and other bad habits are not acceptable.

Derby
Our Derby Program is designed to take the skills learned in the Puppy Program to the next level. This program requires more involvement from the dogs and the owners. After this program has been completed, you will have a dog that has been through a program specifically tailored to enhance your dog’s natural abilities as a wild bird dog.

  • Yard work- Whoa, Come, Heel, Fetch, Kennel, Forward Run, and Whistle Commands. We also start conducting Whoa sessions on the barrel and bench to develop intensity and style.
  • Collar Introduction- At this time the dog is introduced to the Electronic Collar using low stimulation, and praise.
  • Hunting- Dogs will learn to hunt game in all conditions and locations.
  • Gunfire- Dogs will move from .22 caliber gunshots to a light-gauge shotgun barrel with a .209 primer.
  • Stop-to-flush- Dog will start “Stop-to-flush” workouts during this period.
  • Backing- Honoring and responding to hunting with other dogs will start during this period.

Gun Dog
This is the final phase of our program. It is designed to make a dog a gun dog for life. Dogs must have completed at least Derby program before enrolling in the Gun Dog Program.

  • Yard Work- Completion of Whoa, Come, Heel, Fetch, Kennel, Forward Run, and Whistle Commands. All Whoa work is done on birds at this stage.
  • Collar Conditioning- Electronic Collar is used while doing field training.
  • Hunting- Dogs will hunt in all conditions and locations. Live birds are shot over dog.
  • Gunfire- Live rounds are used while training dog.
  • Stop-to-Flush- Dog completes “Stop-to-flush” training.
  • Backing- Dog will back and honor other dogs while hunting.
  • Steady to Wing, Shot, and Fall- Dogs will learn to stand for the flush and shot. A lot of time and special care are given during this phase to ensure the dog will retain all the natural abilities, and to increase the dog’s confidence while hunting and on birds.
